CO2 LASER RESURFACING

Fractional CO₂ laser resurfacing is a medical procedure that uses controlled laser energy to create microscopic columns within the skin. These microthermal zones stimulate the skin’s natural healing response and may assist in improving certain skin concerns.

This treatment may be considered in selected patients for concerns such as deep wrinkles, acne scarring, sun damage, elastosis and uneven skin texture. Suitability for treatment is determined during consultation following assessment of medical history, medications, skin type and treatment goals.

How the treatment works
Fractional CO₂ laser technology delivers laser energy in a pattern of small micro-columns across the treatment area. These columns create controlled zones of ablation and thermal coagulation within the skin. The surrounding untreated skin assists with healing while new collagen and elastin may form during the recovery process.

Procedure time
Patients typically spend around one hour in the clinic, which includes preparation time. The laser treatment itself usually takes approximately 20 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area.

Prior to treatment, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin. In some cases oral pain relief may also be offered. Following the procedure, a post-treatment balm is applied and patients are provided with aftercare instructions and a recovery pack.

Downtime and recovery
Recovery time varies depending on the depth of the treatment and the individual response of the skin. For deeper treatments, patients may experience redness, swelling and skin flaking for approximately 5–7 days. Some redness may persist for several weeks as the skin continues to heal.

During the recovery period patients are advised to follow post-treatment care instructions carefully and to avoid sun exposure while the skin is healing.

Possible risks and side effects
As with any medical procedure, fractional CO₂ laser resurfacing carries potential risks. These may include redness, swelling, bleeding, infection, pigment changes, prolonged redness, scarring and unsatisfactory cosmetic outcomes. The risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may be higher in individuals with darker skin types.

All potential risks and expected recovery are discussed in detail during consultation before treatment.

Conditions that may be treated
Fractional CO₂ laser resurfacing may be considered in selected patients for:

  • wrinkles and skin texture changes
  • acne scars and other scarring
  • sun damage and photoaging
  • pigmentation irregularities
  • benign skin lesions such as seborrhoeic keratoses, warts or certain naevi (when clinically appropriate)

Treatment frequency
Treatment plans vary between individuals. Some patients may require a single treatment, while others may benefit from staged treatments depending on the condition being addressed. The number and timing of treatments are determined during consultation.

Aftercare
Following treatment, patients are advised to keep the treated area clean, apply the recommended post-procedure balm and avoid sun exposure while the skin is healing. Vinegar soaks and other aftercare measures may be recommended to support recovery.

Detailed written aftercare instructions and an aftercare pack are available following the procedure.

Treatment plans consider both medical and procedural options where appropriate. Wylah is a doctor-led clinic. All treatments are guided by clinical assessment, with consideration given to underlying factors as well as the visible features of the skin.

A range of non-surgical procedures and medical skin treatments are offered, with treatment plans tailored to the individual. The aim is to support skin health and address patient concerns in a measured and considered way. No two patients are the same, and all treatments require consultation to determine suitability.

Wy-lah is an aboriginal name for Yellow-tailed black cockatoo. For Dr Fox, this animal represents new beginnings, a good omen and a connection to her ancestors.
