PRP MUSCULOSKELETAL

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated component of a patient’s own blood. Platelets contain growth factors that are involved in the body’s natural healing processes.

During a PRP procedure, a small sample of blood is taken and processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other components of the blood. The concentrated plasma is then placed into the affected area using injection techniques.

PRP may be considered in selected patients as part of a treatment approach for certain musculoskeletal conditions involving tendons, ligaments or joints.

Suitability and Consultation
All procedures require a consultation with Dr Fox to determine whether treatment is appropriate. During consultation, medical history, medications, imaging results and the nature of the injury or condition are reviewed.

Not all patients will be suitable for PRP treatment. Alternative treatment options, potential risks and expected recovery will be discussed before any procedure is performed.

Information provided on this page is general in nature and is intended for educational purposes only.

Conditions that may be considered for PRP treatment

PRP may be considered in selected patients for conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • plantar fasciitis
  • ligament sprains
  • patellar tendinopathy
  • tennis elbow
  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • hamstring strains

Suitability for treatment depends on the nature of the injury and individual patient factors.

How the procedure works

Platelets play a role in the body’s natural response to injury. Growth factors contained within platelets may contribute to tissue repair processes.

Following preparation of the platelet-rich plasma, the concentrated solution is injected into the targeted area. Imaging guidance may be used where appropriate.

Procedure time
The appointment typically takes up to 60 minutes, including preparation time and the procedure itself.

Recovery
Following the injection, patients may experience temporary soreness, swelling or stiffness in the treated area. Activity modification may be recommended for several days following treatment.

Risks and side effects
As with any medical procedure, PRP injections carry potential risks. These may include pain at the injection site, swelling, bleeding, infection, nerve irritation and unsatisfactory outcomes. Recovery experiences vary between individuals.

All potential risks and aftercare instructions are discussed during consultation prior to treatment.

Treatment response
PRP does not work immediately. If treatment is suitable, changes may occur gradually over several weeks as part of the body’s healing response. The number of treatments recommended varies depending on the condition being treated and individual clinical assessment.

Duration and downtime
Procedure duration – up to 60 minutes
Recovery – temporary soreness may occur for several days following treatment

Pricing
Pricing varies depending on the condition being treated and the treatment plan recommended following consultation.
